Born in Valencia.

Ana Penyas was born in Valencia in 1987. She graduated with a degree in industrial design and art at the University of Valencia. Her graphic novel “We Ladies Are Fine” (2017), in which Penyas gives a voice to her grandmothers and all those “invisible women” of post-war Spain, won the Spanish National Award for comic books (Premio Nacional del Cómic) in 2018. This graphic novel has also won the international comic book award FNAC-Salamandra Graphic in 2017 and Ana Penyas was declared best young graphic artist at the Comic Book Fair in Barcelona in 2018.

Penyas has published two other illustrated books: short story collection “Mexique” which talks about more than four hundred children who were sent to Mexico during the Spanish civil war, and “En transición“, a kind of illustrated journey through last eighty years of Spanish history, with special importance given to Franco’s regime.

We Ladies Are Fine

While receiving the Spanish Nacionale Award for graphic novel in 2018, Ana Penyas remarked how it is less important that she is the first female winner of this esteemed award and much more important that it was won because of a story about women, elderly women.
