Carol Ann Duffy was born 1955 in Gorbals, a working-class neighbourhood in Glasgow. She lives in Manchester and is a professor of contemporary poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is the first woman to be appointed Poet Laureate, a position which she held from 2009 to 2019.
Duffy published dozens of poetries, plays and children’s titles since 1974. She has been awarded a series of prizes and accolades, most notable among which are the T. S. Eliot Prize, Costa Poetry Award, PEN Pinter Prize, Signal Prize for Children’s Literature, Whitbread and Forward Prize, Royal Society of Literature Fellowship, as well as Lannan and E. M. Forster Prizes from the USA, among many others. Duffy has been granted several honorary doctorates and medals, and in 2015 she was named Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
Duffy’s plays have been performed in big avenues and her poetry books are a part of the school curriculum in United Kingdom on different levels.
This book of selected poems is a first substantial translation of Duffy’s poems in book form into Croatian.
